What Clothes to Pack for a Winter Vacation in Lapland

While -20 degrees Celsius may seem extremely cold to some, it’s a typical winter temperature for Lapland, especially as the season progresses beyond the early winter period. This is why packing appropriate clothing is crucial for an enjoyable vacation in Lapland. Even milder temperatures can feel chilly during activities like husky and reindeer sleigh rides. The Finns have honed the art of dressing warmly over centuries, so here are our tips on what clothes to pack for your winter holiday in Lapland!

Pack Layers, Layers, and Some More Layers

Layering is essential for winter dressing, creating a crucial barrier against the biting winter cold. The air trapped between layers serves as insulation, shielding your body from the harsh chill. The rule of thumb: the more layers you don, the better the insulation. For most, three layers is the winning combo.

  1. The base layer is a tight layer of long underwear, merino wool base layer, tights, or technical sportswear.
  2. The mid-layer is a looser layer, such as woolen pullovers, fleeces, or even a warm sweater. A lightweight down jacket also works as a mid-layer. And do not forget to bring sweatpants, woolen trousers, etc., with you!
  3. The top layer blocks water and wind. Isolated, waterproof, and windproof jackets and pants are a must in these conditions!

Winter Boots and Woolen Socks

Ensuring your feet stay warm is important in winter. Quality winter boots should provide ample space for layering with woolen socks, along with an insulating sole that offers a solid grip. Cold feet can be incredibly uncomfortable and even painful. Considering the slippery nature of snow and ice, opting for winter boots with excellent traction is a wise choice!

Beanie, Mittens, and Scarf are a Must on Winter Vacations

The final touches to any winter ensemble include a beanie, mittens, and a scarf, and for good reason! The head is where your body releases the most heat. Bringing along a warm, protective, and wind-blocking beanie on your vacation will enhance your winter days in Lapland. It’s essential to keep your hands covered when outdoors in winter, and having a cozy set of mittens packed ensures a delightful time outside. A scarf aids in blocking airflow from the neckline to your mid and base layers, keeping both your neck and body warmer. The snugger the scarf, the cozier you’ll be!

Pack your Swimsuit for Winter Vacation in Rovaniemi

No, we’re not kidding. While this won’t keep you warm, it will let you embrace your inner Finn! Even though Finnish people do go naked to the sauna, you might feel a bit more comfortable in your swimsuit. Once you’re hot enough, it’s time to experience the extreme cold by taking a plunge into a frozen lake.

What if I Don’t Have Any Winter Clothes to Pack?

Fear not! We recognize that occasional extreme conditions come with the territory in Finland, so steps have been taken to ensure our guests’ warmth. Almost every activity operator in Lapland offers thermal clothing for activities. At Apukka Resort, whether you’re staying with us or just taking part in one of our tours, you have free access to thermal clothing.
